Camillus Hutson Kennedy, Jr.

(“CHK” 12/1924 to 1/1926)
Camillus Hutson Kennedy, Jr. (10/9/1896 to 8/11/1973 (Riverview Cemetery)) is listed as a “laborer” in the 1914-1915 City of Richmond Directories, living with his father at 1104 Beverly Street, but in the United States Navy for 1918 and 1919. His January 22, 1918 draft card lists him of medium height with brown hair and brown eyes and employed as a Railroad Brakeman for the RF&P Railroad, having served four years as a gunner’s mate in the US Navy. He had two younger brothers (James (3 years younger) and David (8 years younger). In the 1920 and 1921 directories he is listed as an employee of the City of Richmond as “Chief Guard.” In the 1921 Directory he is listed as a draftsman for F. C. Messerschmidt. The 1922-1924 Directories list him simply as a draftsman. The 1925 City Directory lists him as a draftsman for Charles M. Robinson Architects and living at 1112 Idlewood.
An article in the Danville Bee dated October 8, 1925 discusses that he was in Danville, VA with Custer Robinson and Ben Ruffin performing the School Architect Survey of the city schools. The 1926-1933 City Directories list him as a draftsman at Carneal and Johnston. He married Grace Mae Boltz on April 21, 1920 in Richmond. The 1930 Census lists him with four children (Camillus, III (9), Grace (5), Dorothy (3) and Jean (under 1).
The 1934 lists him as only “draftsman”; 1935 as a clerk; 1936 and 1937 as an employee of the State board of Health. In 1938 he joined the firm of J. Binford Walford and continued as a draftsman through the merger into Walford & Wright and then to Wright Jones & Wilkerson. The 1940 census lists him living with Grace at 507 Libbie Avenue. His WWII Draft Card dated 1942 lists his employment as with J. Binford Walford. To the recollection of the Boynton Rothchild Rowland partners, he never retired. In July 2020, Boynton Rothchild Roland gave David Robinson some of Mr. Kennedy’s books that were still used as part of their architectural library.
His wife, Grace Mae Boltz Kennedy (5/22/1900 to 12/15/1945) of Richmond (Born to Augustus Boltz and Alice Maud Gilman Boltz), died at Grace Hospital of Uremia due to Nephritis. They had four children, Mrs. Grace Mae Burkitt, Dorothy Lee Kennedy, Joyce Marie Kennedy and Robert Stuart Kennedy.
No obituary could be located. His death certificate states that he was employed at the time of his death by Wright, Jones and Wilkerson as draftsman. He died of an acute myocardial infarction on August 11, 1973. He is shown in the February 1926 photo of the drafting room of Charles M. Robinson Architects.
